What is the best type of restaurant lighting?

Which kind of lighting can be used to set a perfect restaurant to make people stay longer & spend more time? What type of lighting will make my customers stay longer (and spend more money 😎)?

Make sure you use warm white lights that is quite intimate, and relaxing. That is often done with a designer pendant light hung just above the table using an Edison globe. Provides the perfect experience IMHO!

Other than emergency lights, you should ensure the lighting is for your customers not for your staff. So you should create warm atmosphere with a welcoming mood. I've seen LED strip lights on the walls that did a wonderful job.

Lighting can literally make or break a restaurant. If your budget is very small, you can install warm white gimble downlight (make sure they are gimbles, as you will want to adjust them) which are dimmable.

A dim table lamp on each table (you can get LED table lamps that actually flicker like candles these days) makes a lovely touch, and also enables patrons to read the menu which is sometimes very hard in dim lighting.

This dim, moody, romantic lighting. This will enhance the experience and motivate the customers to buy wine and spirits, which is a huge money spinner. Lighting should make the patrons isolated from other tables.

Whatever lights you choose there are two guidelines: 1. They should be warm white. 2. They should be dimmable.

my office lights are quite old, working but beginning to fail. They are fluorescent. I am wondering if I should just upgrade all of them to LED?

I would highly recommend it. LEDs last much, much longer than fluorescent lights, they give off better light, and they are cheaper to run.

LED lights are extremely energy efficient and they have the longest lifespan of any type of light. So definitely yes.

Studies have shown the bad lighting can cause headaches, eye strain, and lead to lost productivity and efficiency. So I would say it is vital and will pay for itself.

Over the years I have worked in many offices, with a range of lighting that has been from the atrocious to the sublime. I can categorically state that bad or even medium lighting has had a detrimental impact on everything - including worker output, sickness, fatigue, you name it.

Most countries actually have a standard for this. For example, in Australia the standard for office lighting is covered under AS 1680.2.2-1994 Interior lighting - Office and screen-based tasks.

I think the best type of lighting for offices is LED panels. Very affordable and provides excellent illumination without glare.

I have seen lot of modern offices with smart lights. That way the office conserves a lot of energy whilst at the same time being able to control brightness etc at the tip of a switch.

Some offices use ceiling spotlights. That requires much better design to avoid pools of shadows and over bright illumination, but I think provides a much better aesthetic than LED panel lights.

Obviously it depends on the size of your premises and the use of the lights, but you get what you pay for. Don't go for cheap lights because they will fail and you will be called back to replace them in a few months time.

If you are looking for commercial grade shop lights over 1000 lumens, then you would be paying at least $50 and for really high grade ones, three times that.
