How important is it is get the lighting in an office almost perfect? Is it really necessary or is just overblown?

Studies have shown the bad lighting can cause headaches, eye strain, and lead to lost productivity and efficiency. So I would say it is vital and will pay for itself.

Over the years I have worked in many offices, with a range of lighting that has been from the atrocious to the sublime. I can categorically state that bad or even medium lighting has had a detrimental impact on everything - including worker output, sickness, fatigue, you name it.

People spend more time in the office than anywhere else, and need to be fresh and alert the entire time, so it is extremely important to get right.

A lot of employers overlook good lighting because they underestimate its important. Don't make that mistake!

Offices should avoid bad lighting which includes:

  • Areas which are too bright
  • Pools of shadows
  • Direct glare
  • Indirect glare from shiny surfaces
  • Bad contrast
  • Flickering lights
  • Monitors with bad lights
