Lots of good options exists that have dual purposes: illuination + safety. This includes floodlights, wall lights, bulkheads, lamp posts etc.

I recommend floodlights - these are brilliant to provide massive lighting.
Also I have light in my deck which are good for night dining and sitting outside.

I definitely recommend outdoors lighting centred around security.
Choose the darkest areas of your exterior and where thieves can enter.

Apart from illumination and security, safety os also a major consideration - like stairs, pools and places where you could trip easily.

Consider adding a motion sensor to yoru outdoor lights. This will improve your safety and conserve power as well.

Outdoor lights can be very expensive, do make sure your use LED globes and ideally with motion sendors if possible.

Outdoor lighting is actually an art form - whatever your need is, always use a professional to design it.

If you have statues or sculptures or any other landmarks, use outdoor lights to highlight them.
Also consider using solar lights. These days the solar lights are really high quality!

Something that is often neglected is your keyhole! When you come home at night, you need good lighting around your door to be able to open it with your key.

Consider using what is called a 'wall wash' which is aiming a wide angle of light at a wall from a short distance.

NOT lighting some items outdoors can be just as important as lighting items, because it can take the focus away from ugly things such as sheds.
