Don't forget that commercial premises also use outdoor lighting for the same purposes - safety, decorations, illumination and security.

On porches consider outdoor pendants or recessed lights. I stay away from oyster lights as I think they look very ugly.

A good lighting designer will layer their lights, for example a flood light with an up down light.
