Recessed downlights vs surface mounted downlights

There seems to be two main types of downlights: recessed and surface mounted. Which type should I choose? Thanks.

Really depends on your ceiling height and whether you have access into your ceiling cavity.

If you have no access into your ceiling cavity, which is obviously true with apartments, then you have to have surface mounted light.

Also surface mounted downlights are obviously a bit lower than recessed ones, so if you have quite low ceilings I would recommend recessed.

Note that you can get gimbles (ie adjustable downlights) in both types.
