Too many people go overboard in their hallways and entries.
Keep it simple and subtle! Just need enough light for security and ambient illumination.

Gimbles and spotlights work really well. They can be directed precisely where you need it, and the shadows they create provide for a lovely atmosphere.

In terms of lumens I would suggest about 1500 to 4500 lumens for entries, and 1500 to 3000 lumens for hallways, depending upon the size of your space.
